Start reading labels, there's no way to avoid this tip. If you don't know what you're putting in your mouth, don't assume, check the ingredients list and serving sizes. It's not that complicated a task, but it will require effort. If nothing else, just pay attention to the calorie count.
Write down what you eat, keeping a food journal helps you pin point your eating pattern and will enable you to easily modify it. You will also be able to keep track of your calorie count. If possible, have your Registered Dietitian or doctor to review your journal to help you come up with a more healthy diet plan.
Try to avoid surrounding yourself with bad foods. Likewise, it makes it less likely that you eat too much right out of the box when you only have a fist-size serving sitting in front of you.
Use lower fat cheeses that are spreadable on your morning bagel, instead of the full fat, full calorie cream cheese that you are used to. Not only will this save you a lot of calories, but it also tastes better and you will feel less guilty about what you had for breakfast.
Always beware labels, as "light" does not always mean light in calories! Many times, light versions of foods include simply reduced fat. This means that overloading on light foods can spell more caloric intake for you. Always read the labels of foods before purchasing them to avoid this trap.
